Delay due to ATC staffing problems at West Drayton. The reason given by the captain was that there was a shortage of controllers at West Drayton since there was training being carried out at the new centre at Swanwick.

During the stay on the ground, breakfast was served. When clearance to take-off was given a lower flight level that usual, at 19,000 ft, was used.

After the southbound trip it had been hoped to have a better northbound trip. Unfortunately a business meeting overran, which meant my colleagues and I did not check in till 17:20. We had previously checked to see if the flight was on time. If it had not been our alternative plan was to head to Gatwick.

The delay was due to a technical fault in another plane at Edinburgh earlier in the day. When we checked in at SOU, the standby aircraft had just arrived at EDI to pick up the passengers headnig for Southampton. It arrived at SOU at 19:10 contrary to anything the BAA was telling us on the information screens.

G-ERJA had gone "tech" instead of going to EDI on BA4036, and had returned to BRS. A few of the passengers were transfered to BA 4026 (which was only half full), but the majority were to be bused to LHR for the LHR-EDI shuttle. In the above picture you can see one of the GLA BA ground staff giving directions to an EDI passenger. 16 August 2001 - Approach shot to Runway 23 at GLA

With the landing at GLA being on Runway 23, the expected approach is basically up the M74/M73, between Motherwell and Hamilton and to the west of Cumbernauld, and then turn left just before reaching the Campsies.

This time approach route was further east than usual to the east of Motherwell and Cumbernauld before turning left to run south of the Campsies and over Bishopbriggs and Maryhill.

A late turn to line up with the runway gave the adjacent picture of the runway. Some stiff braking enabled a late turn off the runway on to taxiway D.

There was a very subdued atmosphere at Southampton Airport, since the TV was showing live the events from New York following the crashing of the hijacked planes into the World Trade Center. At Glasgow several diverted aircraft were on the International Pier - Air Canada AC845 from Frankfurt (A340 - C-GDVV) and British Airways BA287 to San Fransico (B747-400 - G-BNLT). The BA B744 was later towed to the "old" International Pier for the night to join an American Airlines B767-300.

The trip to Glasgow Airport was in torrential rain during the morning peak. Check-in took just over one hour. Just after getting to Gate 33, it was announced that the aircraft had been delayed in Manchester. It was later discovered that this was due to the requirement to replace an Oxygen Cylinder. Arrival at Toronto was around 2 hours late, also in torrential rain. By the time the Hire Car had been picked, we hit the Toronto Friday evening peak traffic.

Check-in at Toronto took around 90 minutes, with queues combined for the GLA/MAN, LHR (2 off) and CDG flights and only three check-in staff provided. After take-off, the flight followed the shore of Lake Ontario (Toronto was momentarily hidden by a cloud, with a clear view of Montreal provided at around 2120 (EST). We were not told until after landing that we would have to leave the plane at Manchester, and the re-boarding was choatic, partly due to the MAN-YYZ pax blocking the gate area, preventing the YYZ-GLA pax returning to their seats.

Whilst parking the car I observed an unidentified Spanair B737 taking off on Rwy 02. This is the first time I have seen any commercial jets other than EMB145 or BAe146 using Southampton.

Virtually no wind meant that landing and departing planes were using the most convienent Runway for their routing. Two landing planes prior to our takeoff used Rwy 20 leaving the runway via taxiway A. G-EMBL entered the runway at taxiway B and taxied to the turning point at the end of Rwy 02 prior to takeoff.

At 11:30 the aircraft had gone "tech". Due to low visibility at GLA, runway 10/28 was closed with moveable barriers across it between taxiway A and runway 05/23. The Cat II/III holding points were in use.

At Bristol the Embraer 145 now face north when parked on the easterly stands due to complaints about the noise from the inhabitents of Lulsgate Bottom.

Two passengers travelling to Paris managed to get on the wrong plane, having walked past their bus to the aircraft that was to take them to Paris.

On approach to GLA the pilot was informed that he would have to enter the holding pattern. Once in the holding pattern, the pilot was told that GLA was closed due to torrential rain and oil-contaminated taxiways. Several aircraft had already diverted to Edinburgh (EDI) to refuel, however the Airbus had sufficient fuel to circle for quite some time.

On landing a fault developed with the jetty at Gate 23. Steps were brought to the rear door, however the jetty was made to work and the aircraft was emptied through the forward door.
